Introduction

GitHub Copilot is registered by hand — it is not available in Discovery. Copilot Chat in VS Code has built-in OpenTelemetry tracing, so once VS Code is pointed at UnifyApps, Copilot Chat conversations arrive as traces and sessions.

Where to find it

AI Governance > Agent Registry > Register Agent > GitHub Copilot. The values to configure appear on the agent's Setup tab afterwards.

The flow

  1. Register the agent — Platform GitHub Copilot, name, description, owner. It arrives as Setup Pending on Observe · Advisory.

  2. Configure VS Code — Set the environment variables and settings below, using the endpoint and header from the Setup tab.

  3. Use Copilot Chat — Status flips to Active on the first trace.

  4. Point a policy at it — Governance needs a policy covering the asset.

Configure VS Code

Step 1: Set the environment variables

  • OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT — the endpoint shown on the Setup tab.

  • OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS — the authorisation header shown on the Setup tab. Needed only if your endpoint requires auth.

  • OTEL_SERVICE_NAME="copilot-chat"

Step 2: Turn on Copilot Chat tracing in settings.json

  • "github.copilot.chat.otlp.enabled": true

  • "telemetry.telemetryLevel": "all"

Step 3: Restart VS Code and use Copilot Chat

The environment variables are read when VS Code starts. The agent's Setup tab shows Waiting for traces… until the first one arrives.

How sessions are grouped

Traces are grouped into sessions by gen_ai.conversation.id, so one Copilot Chat conversation is one session in the agent's Observability tab. Utility calls without a conversation id are ignored.

Limitations

  1. Observation only — UnifyApps is not in Copilot's request path, so only Flag takes effect. Controls set to Block or Mask are recorded as incidents but do not intervene.

  2. Coverage is per installation — Only VS Code installations configured as above send traces. A developer who has not set it up is invisible here.

  3. Copilot Chat only — The tracing comes from Copilot Chat in VS Code, and needs a recent version of VS Code with Copilot Chat.
