The Catalog Manager is where you create, organize, and govern the Data Catalogs that make up your organization's data model. This page covers the catalog list, creating and editing catalogs, deleting them, and the permissions that control who can do what.
Overview
A Data Catalog is a governed inventory of your data assets. Connect data sources — databases, warehouses, or SaaS apps — to a catalog, and it automatically discovers and indexes their databases, schemas, tables, and fields as browsable assets, complete with metadata, ownership, classifications, and lineage. Create one catalog per data domain or environment you want to keep organized; each catalog holds its own sources and assets, so nothing from one catalog appears inside another.
The Data Catalog list
Open Data Catalog to see every catalog you have access to, listed with its Catalog Name, Description, Apps Used (icons for the connected source applications), Owner, and Last Updated. Last Updated shows a dash if the catalog has never been edited since creation — hover it to see audit details. Use the columns menu to reveal two hidden-by-default columns, Created On and Last Updated By; your choice is remembered on future visits. A count pill beside the Data Catalog title shows the total number of catalogs you can see. Use the Search data catalogs box to find one by name, and click anywhere on a row to open that catalog's asset browser. Before you create your first catalog, you'll see a Create Your First Catalog prompt with pointers to Connect Data Sources and Set Up Governance, plus a New Catalog button.
Creating or editing a catalog
To create a catalog, select New Catalog from the list page. The New Data Catalog form only asks for a Catalog Name (required) and About this Catalog, an optional description. Save it and the catalog appears in the list immediately, ready for you to connect data sources. To make changes later, open a catalog's row menu and choose Edit — this reopens the same two-field form, titled Edit Data Catalog, so you can update the name or description at any time. The catalog itself only stores this basic identifying information; the databases, schemas, and tables you see inside come from the data sources you connect afterward.
Deleting a catalog
To remove a catalog you no longer need, open its row menu and choose Delete. You'll be asked to confirm:
Delete Data Catalog? — Are you sure you want to delete the Catalog '{name}'? This action cannot be undone.
Read the confirmation carefully, since deletion is permanent. If Delete doesn't appear in the row menu, you don't have delete access on that catalog.
Permissions
Access to catalog actions is controlled per catalog, not just at the module level. Viewing and browsing a catalog's assets only requires view access. Editing a catalog's name or description requires edit access on that specific catalog, and removing it requires delete access on that specific catalog — without it, Delete won't appear in the row menu. Creating brand-new catalogs requires create access on the Data Catalog module as a whole. With only view access, you can still open and explore a catalog, but Edit and Delete stay hidden.
Notes
Last Updated shows a dash until the catalog is edited for the first time after creation — this isn't an error.
Your choice of visible columns (Created On, Last Updated By) is remembered for you personally, not shared across your team.
Deleting a catalog is permanent, so double-check the catalog name in the confirmation dialog before proceeding.
If Edit or Delete is missing from a row menu, it's almost always a permissions issue — check with your admin if you believe you should have access.
