The Tools section is where you expose connector actions — querying databases, calling APIs, running computations — as MCP tools that connected clients can call.
Overview
Tools is the first section of a server's configuration, headed Tools — "Interact with external systems, such as querying databases, calling APIs, or performing computations" — with an Add Tool button. Each tool wraps one action from a connected application and is offered to MCP clients under its tool name.
The table shows:
Column | Details |
|---|---|
Application | The connected app the tool's action belongs to, with its icon. |
Tool Name | The name MCP clients see for this tool. |
Tool Description | The description MCP clients see for this tool. |
Action | The underlying operation being wrapped, shown as a tag. |
Before any tool exists, the section shows "Add your first Tool" — "Add your first tool to interact with external systems through the MCP Server."
Adding a Tool
Click Add Tool to open a side panel that walks through up to five steps:
Step | What you do |
|---|---|
1. Pick an application | "Select the tool you want to connect" — shows the catalog of applications. |
2. Select a Connection | Only shown if the application requires sign-in; choose an existing connection or add a new one. |
3. Select an Action | Search ("Search for an action") and pick the operation to expose. Tool name and description are pre-filled from the action (editable later). |
4. Setup Tool | Fill in the action's input fields; anything left for the model becomes part of the tool's input. |
5. Map Output | Define what the tool returns, then click Add. |
Mapping Output
The final step defines the tool result MCP clients receive. You build a list of content items, each one of:
Text Content
Image Content (base64 data + MIME type)
Embedded Resource (text or binary)
A data panel on the side shows the action's output fields — "Select pills to map data" — so you can insert them into the content. An Is Error flag is available for marking failure results. Click Add (or Save when editing) to finish.
Editing and Deleting a Tool
Click a row to open Tool Details, where Tool Name and Description are editable in place, alongside a view of the Application and Action it wraps. Use Edit in the row menu to reopen the full setup (inputs and output mapping). Delete in the row menu asks "Delete Tool?" — "Are you sure you want to delete the Tool '<name>'? This action cannot be undone."
Naming Conflicts and Errors
Tool names are checked against the server when you add one. If the name is already taken, the new tool is saved with a (Copy …) suffix appended instead of failing — rename it from Tool Details afterwards.
Note: If an application shows "Tool configuration required" instead of an action list, that application has no actions enabled for use as tools yet. Contact support@unifyapps.com to prioritize the application, or pick a different one.
